G001 – location map insertion
May 19, 2008
To place a location map on sheet G001begin by creating a pdf of your location from mapquest. (Per Jeremy VectorWorks always prefers pdfs over other file types). You can check 3.0 photos in your job file for an existing location map as one is usually needed for the project plan.
Once you have a pdf of your location go to:
File – import – import pdf
Locate & select your location map pdf in the “import pdf” window, choose “open”
In new “import pdf” window make sure you adjust the range if needed. Generally “pages from 1 to 1 should be checked, choose “import”.
Stretch your location map to fit in the location map box on G001.
Note: if you use a jpeg of the lacation map the size can not be stretched to fit the box permanently.
Tracing a PDF

If you bring a PDF into VectorWorks to trace over and the file is working very slow you can try this to make it work more quickly.
-open the pdf (outside of VW)
-save as a JPEG
-Import the file by going to:
-File
-Import
-Import image file
-then find your file
Leader/Call-outs Standard
May 1, 2008
Leaders shall be made using the Call Out tool
- When you start to note, use the Call Out tool and put a space in the Note box that comes up. Then, use a Text Box to write note. This technique is similar to what was used in AutoCAD and will most likely change in the future.
- To make another note, simply copy or duplicate.
- Polylines shall NEVER be used. They can accidentally be converted to a Polygon and given a fill, thus hiding text.
- All notes and associated arrows shall go on the Anno-Note class.
Design Layer Standard
May 1, 2008
- Each design layer shall have a scale not equal to 1:1 (1/8”=1’0” most common).
- For masterfiles, use the scale of A101.
- For details, sections, wall sections, and elevations, use the scale that you want the viewport to be on the sheet.
- Room tags, window tags, and door tags shall be inserted on the masterfile. As in AutoCAD, duplicates may need to be inserted on enlarged plans and the originals may need to be turned invisible.
Dimension Standard
May 1, 2008
Dimensions shall be created using the YWA dim style
- The style is created in the YWA.template
Text Standards
May 1, 2008
Fonts shall be:
- Size 10 (w/ 10pt. spacing) MathSoftText BOLD for Notes and Dimensions
- Size 18 Arial for Titles
- The title block shall be set to Arial, plain style.
